THE Magistrate’s Court yesterday handed a fine of BND75,000 to a South Korean citizen, after he pleaded guilty to possessing 75 cartons of smuggled cigarettes in various brands.
Magistrate Hajah Noor Amalina binti Dato Paduka Haji Alaihuddin ordered Park Seung-kyun, a 50-year-old tourist guide in Sabah, to pay the fine within six months, or serve 17 months of imprisonment in default.
DPP Raihan Nabilah binti Ahmad Ghazali’s facts of the case state that Park had arrived at the Labu control post in the Temburong District at 4.13pm on August 27, where his vehicle was inspected by customs examiners as a routine procedure.
This led to the discovery of the illicit cigarette stash in the vehicle’s spare tyre compartment.
The defendant admitted to having bought the cigarettes worth RM2,695, from Limbang.
The cigarettes are worth BND7,500 in excise duties.
