The body of Cardinal Cornelius Sim of the Apostolic Vicariate in Brunei Darussalam will be laid to rest at the Kuala Belait cemetery today.

Prior to the journey to KB cemetery, there will be a requiem mass at the Church of Our Lady of Assumption from 9am.

Several members of the Diplomatic Corps and individuals yesterday paid their last respect to the late cardinal.

High Commissioner of India to Brunei Darussalam Ajaneesh Kumar, Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Christopher B Montero and prominent figures in the local community were seen at yesterday’s event.

Through the coordination and facilitation of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Cardinal Sim was admitted to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan on May 8 for medical treatment.

Despite medical intervention, he grew weaker and eventually succumbed on May 29 and his body returned to Brunei on June 11. He was 70.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim was born on September 16, 1951, in Seria, Belait District, and worked in the engineering field for seven years before starting his priestly studies.

He was the Sultanate’s second local priest ordained and was named Vicar General of Brunei in 1995, and Prefect of the Apostolic Prefecture of Brunei in 1997.

He was appointed as bishop in 2004, and was named one of the 13 new cardinals by Pope Francis last year.
