Focus on women in literature

Izah Azahari

The dignity of women in the literary works of Fatimah Busu from Western and Islamic perspectives was the focus of yesterday’s virtual International Malay Language, Literature and Culture Congress Series (KABSBM) in conjunction with the Language Month organised by the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP).

The paper was presented by Universiti Malaya’s Associate Professor Madya Dr Norhayati binti Abdul Rahman. Chairing the event was DBP’s Head of the Administration and Management Division Hajah Annisa binti Haji Moksin.

Among presentations was the process of improving the position of women in the eyes of society, especially in literary works.

Three literary works of Fatimah Busu were examined, using Western and Islamic feminist approaches.

Some 118 participants attended the event including DBP Acting Director Suip bin Haji Abdul Wahab, DBP Acting Deputy Director Hajah Sariani binti Haji Ishak, speakers in and outside the country, strategic partners, senior government officials, and language, literature and culture enthusiasts.

KABSBM, themed ‘Bahasa Jiwa Bangsa’, is supported by the DBP’s strategic partners – Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), Brunei Youth Council (BYC), Asterawani and Putra Seni Group.
