Fly infestation: 13 compound fines issued

In continuing the efforts to address the issue of fly infestation reported by the public in several villages in Mukim Pengkalan Batu, a joint operation was carried out by the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism with cooperation of the Brunei-Muara District Office under the Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday.

The joint operation aimed to ensure cleanliness at agriculture farms in Agricultural Development Area (KKP) Batumpu; KKP Si Bongkok, Kampong Parit, Masin; and KKP Si Bangkok, Kampong Batong.

Meanwhile, Brunei Muara District Office issued 13 compound fines to several companies during the visit for violating the Minor Offences Act, Chapter 30 which include improper disposal of farm waste, failing to maintain cleanliness at the worker’s quarters, disposing of rubbish in public areas, old abandoned vehicles left in the open areas of the farm, and improper sewage system.

The companies issued with a BND200 compound fine are Syarikat Bidah Duraman dan Anak-Anak; Syarikat Bunga Hati; Perusahaan Dyg Zaiton Hj Aman dan Anak-Anak; Syarikat Widiyana Seputra Agricultural Farming; Syarikat HK Amirah; Syarikat Shamir; Syarikat Perusahaan Hj Mohd Salleh Hj Ludin dan Anak-Anak; Syarikat Mizu Enterprise; and Syarikat lktisad lbunda, while Syarikat Umu Slamah Enterprise; Syarikat EI-Kibal; Syarikat MSE Agriculture and Farming; and Celapa Enterprise were slapped with a BND500 compound fine.

The offenders were given seven days to settle the fines; failing to do so will result in the matter being brought to court.

The Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism through the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood and relevant agencies through the Working Committee on Dealing with Issues of Cleanliness at Farms and Slaughter Centres will continue to conduct monitoring from time to time, to ensure that agriculture farms adhere to the prescribed standards of hygiene.

Anyone found violating the Environmental Protection and Management Order 2016 under paragraphs 7, 8, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20, 37 and 38, as well as Chapter 30 of the Minor Offences Act for the disposal of rubbish in public areas, will be issued with a compound fine.

The accused will be handed a compound fine of not more than BND500. If found guilty, a further fine of BND1,000 will be slapped, or a month’s imprisonment, for the first convicted offence.

For subsequent offences, a penalty of BND3,000 fine or imprisonment of not more than three months will be applicable.
