The Magistrate’s Court yesterday handed a five months’ jail sentence with strokes of the cane to a Malaysian man found to have entered the country without going through a border checkpoint and without a passport.
Darren anak Lawan was arrested by patrolling customs preventive officers in the vicinity of Kampong Belayang in Temburong District at 12.25am on July 23. After he failed to produce his passport, he was sent to the Berakas Games Village to undergo a mandatory 14-day isolation.
Upon discharge, he was then handed over to the Immigration and National Registration Department who confirmed that the defendant had entered through a slipway from Limbang and ended up at Kampong Belayang, Temburong District.
Immigration prosecutor Adi Yusra Adanan also confirmed with the Bulletin that the defendant’s COVID-19 test results were negative
Magistrate Mohammad Marzuqi Sabtu presided over the case.
