Five houses in Labuan flooded after downpour

LABUAN (Bernama) – At least five houses in Kampong Rancha-Rancha Darat were inundated in waist-high floodwater following more than six hours of heavy rainfall which began at 9pm on Tuesday.

A civil servant, Mohd Rezuan Abd Hassan, 39, said the flash floods had caused alarm to his family as the situation was getting serious. “It was my wife who noticed our area was already flooding, when she woke up at midnight to make our baby’s milk.

“When she woke me up, I saw our house was already flooded by about two feet of water. Like previous years, many houses here are flooded in waist-high water,” he told Bernama when met at his house yesterday. Another victim, Mohd Rasid Jaludin, 55, said it was almost 1am when Rezuan woke him up.

“My wife and I were sleeping when he came to tell us our area was flooding. I saw that the road was flooded and the ground floor of my house already submerged in water,” he said. Rasid who is self-employed appealed to the authorities to resolve the flood problem which has been occurring in the area for more than 10 years.

Village Chief of Kampong Rancha-Rancha Damit bin Bakar said he had contacted the Labuan Corporation, Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP), and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage on the matter.
