The Fisheries Department under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism issued a statement yesterday debunking the viral video on social media depicting an incident in which fish were stranded, allegedly occurring at Kampong Pengkalan Sibabau in Mukim Mentiri.
The department also confirmed that the incident happened abroad and not in the country.
It has become a programme for the Fisheries Department to frequently implement the monitoring and analysing of reddish water in the waters of Brunei Darussalam that can be harmful to public health. The Fisheries Department has found that the Brunei waters are free from any reddish water occurrence and small fishes like tamban, aur-aur and anchovies are safe to consume.
Members of the public and fishermen are advised not to panic about the incident.
The department advised the public not to easily believe information and news spread on the Internet or social media like WhatsApp, X, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook without verifying the information first.
The public is also reminded to be more responsible and not spread wrong any information. – James Kon
