Firemen to the rescue of furry friends in Tawau fire

ANN/THE STAR – Firemen were called in to save some pets after a fire incident at a pet store in Sabah’s east coast Tawau district.

Firefighters helped rescue 10 cats and a dog kept at the shop at Mile 3 of Jalan Apas on Sunday.

Tawau fire station chief Julius John Stephen Jr said a team was rushed to the area after receiving a distress call from a shop staff member at 4.44pm.

It turned out, he said, the shop’s emergency exit sign had somehow caught fire but that only 10 per cent of it had been burned.

“But as a precautionary measure, we took the pets to a safer location outside the shop while we put out the fire and ensured there was no further risk to the shop,” he said, when contacted yesterday.

“The cats and dog were later returned to the shop owner after we fully extinguished the fire,” he added.

In a separate incident, a 44-year-old man was lucky to have only suffered minor injuries after crashing his car into a ditch in front of a police station in the Ranau district shortly after midnight yesterday.

Ranau fire chief Ridwan Mohd Taib said the man had somehow lost control of the car and it landed upside down in the drain.

“The man was given initial treatment by the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) team before being handed over to a waiting ambulance to be sent to the district hospital,” he said.
