Swift action by firefighters stopped a fire from spreading in a government building in Jalan Menteri Besar on Sunday.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (FRD), six firefighters from the Berakas Fire Station Operation ‘C’ Branch led by Haji Said bin Haji Metassim responded to the emergency call around 9.59am.

The firefighters saw thick smoke emitting from the first floor and found the computer server room on fire.

Two teams extinguished the fire within two minutes. No injuries or casualties were reported and the cause of fire and estimated damage cost are under investigation.

The FRD advised the public to always ensure buildings and houses are equipped with a fire extinguisher and fire blanket.

Electrical appliances must be switched off after use or before leaving the building, ensuring flammable materials are kept in a safe place, the FRD added.

In raising safety awareness, the FRD also regularly conducts safety programmes including fire marshal courses, Live Safer 995 and fire safety talks, to increase knowledge on safety during emergency and the right way to use a fire extinguisher.
