Financial services offered in remote Temburong

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) recently completed eight sessions of financial planning, entrepreneurship and digital banking talks in the Temburong District, aimed at government servants, micro enterprises, village heads as well as members of the community.

The holistic approach to financial talks attended by over 200 people, was aimed at raising the level of financial literacy in the community.

Apart from delivering talks to government officers and members of unital and village consultative councils, members of the BIBD team also travelled directly to villages and longhouses in Kampong Selapon, Kampong Batu Apoi, Kampong Amo and Kampong Lepong Baru to engage with members of the community in order to specifically cater to their needs and requirements.

BIBD’s financial planning talks were delivered by BIBD’s certified Islamic Financial Planners.

Among the topics covered were the basics of budgeting and savings, investments and long term financial goals, takaful protection as well as retirement protection, zakat and estate planning.

BIBD’s Deputy Managing Director and Head of Retail Banking Irwan bin Haji Lamit said, “BIBD has always been committed to raising awareness on better financial management from as early as possible.

“These series of talks are also part of BIBD’s efforts to reach out to members of the community in the Temburong District, and we are grateful to the Ministry of Home Affairs, in particular the Temburong District Office for their cooperation and collaboration in this matter.”

BIBD staff also delivered talks for MSME business owners and potential entrepreneurs, introducing the range of products and services available for local micro enterprises and how BIBD is able to support them on their entrepreneurship journey.

Underpinning BIBD’s commitment to digital banking, the bank’s Digital Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) also delivered talks to attendees, to demonstrate the wide range of services that can be done through BIBD NEXGEN.

BIBD’s Deputy Chief Operating Officer Lyndsay Spray said, “We realise that people may be at different stages of their digital journey, so being able to approach our customers directly and give them close guidance on how to fully utilise our NEXGEN services is important to us, especially in our drive to encourage customers to Go Digital.”

To date, BIBD is the only financial institution to maintain a branch in the Temburong District, equipped to serve all customer segments with counter services and digital banking services through Self-Service Terminals, in line with the bank’s strategic efforts to serve all customer segments throughout the country.

This is in line with BIBD’s ongoing commitment to local communities in ensuring that all levels of society regardless of location are able to access the range of products and services offered by BIBD.

The talks are also part of BIBD’s efforts under the Sustainability Framework and Roadmap, to promote inclusive social impact and responsible entrepreneurship in support of the Maqasid Syariah and work towards achieving Brunei Vision 2035.

These efforts also align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), specifically SDG1 (No Poverty), SDG8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG10 (Reduced Inequalities) through a whole of nation approach, in line with SDG17 (Partnership for the Goals).
