Filipino jailed six months for overstaying

A FILIPINO was sentenced by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to six months’ jail with three whippings for overstaying his welcome for 1,046 days.

Christian Paul Tolentino Ramos, 33, was arrested by Immigration Enforcement officers at the parking lot of Nadj Restaurant on Jalan Haji Halus in Kampong Bunut at 8.44pm on March 11, 2019. Officers were conducting an operation that night and the defendant failed to produce his passport to them as he said it was kept by a relative.

During investigations, the defendant was found to have been sponsored by a company who then cancelled his employment pass and was due to leave the country by April 29, 2016.

Records did not show the defendant’s legal stay in the country since then.

Immigration prosecutor Pengiran Norariffin bin Pengiran Haji Hashim prosecuted the case which was presided over by Magistrate Pengiran Hazirah binti Pengiran Haji Md Yusof.
