THE Magistrate’s Court yesterday sentenced a Filipino to 12 months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to stealing from his employer.

According to DPP Kamaliah Fadhilah binti Haji Ibrahim’s facts of the case, the defendant Kevin Salinguhay Tobias, 29, was working as a driver of a household in Kampong Beribi when he saw a Diamond Gold Rolex watch on a table while he was taking care of his elderly employer in his room sometime in February 2017. He tried to steal the watch but due to the circumstances then could not do so.

Two nights later, the defendant entered his employer’s bedroom and stole the watch. He asked a friend to sell the watch for him and managed to make B$300. Of this amount, the defendant gave $100 to his friend and retained the remaining $200, sending this sum back home to the Philippines.

A family member of the household, upon realising the watch had gone missing, began searching for it, leading to the discovery of suspicious items in the defendant’s bedroom.

The defendant admitted to stealing the watch after being questioned by the family member, who lodged a police report when the defendant was unable to return the watch.

DPP Nur Eleana binti Dato Paduka Haji Hairol Arni represented the Public Prosecutor in the case yesterday which was presided over by Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman.
