Filipino community remembers national hero

The Filipino community in Bandar Seri Begawan, spearheaded by the Embassy of the Philippines in Brunei Darussalam commemorated the 124th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines, at the embassy grounds in the Diplomatic Enclave.

Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Christopher Baltazar Montero led the flag-hoisting and wreath-laying ceremonies to mark the event, followed by a reading of Dr Jose Rizal’s poem To the Philippines by Estrella Perez and a Filipino patriotic songs Ang Bayan Ko and Ako ay Pilipino by Filipino musician (trumpeter) Fredaline Parin.

Themed ‘Jose Rizal: Inspiration for Recovery and Healing of the Nation’, Ambassador Montero underscored the relevance of Dr Rizal’s life and example, as a guide for the present generation in facing the pandemic.

The event capped with a short film showing the last few hours of Dr Jose Rizal’s life before his execution on December 30, 1896 and concluded with a group photo.
