A MALAYSIAN female fraudster was yesterday sentenced by the Magistrate’s Court to six months’ imprisonment for tricking an elderly woman into parting with her jewellery.
On August 30, 2018, Merai anak Meling, 55, with three others, approached the 66-year-old woman who was on her way from a private clinic to a grocery shop in the capital. Merai convinced the elderly woman to set up a bank account for the deposit of a cheque amounting to MYR30,000. She promised MYR3,000 as payment for her help.
Merai brought the victim to a bank in Kiulap, where the alleged account was to be opened under the victim’s name. The victim handed over three gold bracelets she was wearing, upon the defendant’s request as security. However, by the time she had finished processing her copies, the defendant had fled the scene.
The victim lodged a police report which led to the defendant’s arrest.
DPP Dayangku Didi-Nuraza binti Pengiran Haji Abdul Latiff prosecuted the case, while Magistrate Kamaliah Fadhilah binti Haji Ibrahim presided over the proceedings.
