Father, son clash in snooker meet

Haji Md Haikal Qarin bin Haji Haironi Hamizin began his campaign in the Merce Snooker Championship 2021 with a 2-0 victory against Awangku Abdul Wafiy in the Group ‘C’ preliminary round at the Merce Snooker Café in Kiulap on Monday night.

The victory set up a competitive family affair as the country’s teenage sensation will meet his father Haji Haironi Hamizin in the next round on July 30.

Haji Haironi, whose match fell during the same session as his son, granted the possibility of a father and son meeting following a 2-0 win over Abdul Rahman.

The winner go on to face either Airwan or Pengiran Zaini on August 1.

Meanwhile, Airwan and Pengiran Zaini moved to the winner’s bracket after identical 2-1 victories over Zi Shahnom and Jong Wee Lee.

Nur Sallehuddin claimed an upset victory after edging out one of the tournament favourites, Hasrijam in a 2-1 set.

The remaining Group ‘C’ matches saw Azuan book his place in the winner’s round after a 2-1 victory over Aziz with Haji Sahruzzaman heading the same path after a 2-0 victory over Syahremy as well as Abdul Rahim, who won 2-0 against Kassim.

Nur Sallehuddin will meet Haji Sahruzzaman while Azuan will play against Abdul Rahim on July 30.

A double elimination format apply during the earlier rounds, allowing participants who lose their opening group match to be entered into a loser’s bracket.

Last night also saw the completion of Group ‘D’ preliminary round matches as the remaining eight of the 64 overall participants took to the tables.

The competition continues with the second round of matches in Group ‘A’ tonight as Pengiran Basheer take on Nuraleem while Faisal will play against Chai Chang Fong. Haji Kamarul Zaman will face a tricky test against Koh Yaw Boon while pool specialist Lim Wei Kok will have to navigate past Asrizal to move to the next round.

The group stages of the competition will run until August 5, in which the top eight competitors will be decided.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals will take place on August 6 with the tournament reaching its conclusion with the final the following day.
