The COVID-19 pandemic, which struck the world over a year ago, made an impact on the local timber industry. The pandemic also affected the chain of demand and supply activities for timber products, as well as businesses within the timber industry in Brunei Darussalam.

Acting Director of Forestry Noralinda binti Haji Ibrahim said this during the prize presentation ceremony yesterday for a wood furniture competition in conjunction with International Day of Forests 2021.

The competition was part of the four-day Brunei Darussalam Timber Products Expo at The Airport Mall, where prizes were presented to competition winners by Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong.

Noralinda, the chairperson of the event, added, “This expo is a manifestation of the government’s support for entrepreneurs in the local timber industry to instil enthusiasm to help boost their productivity and creativity, through the exploration of high-tech machinery.

“The Brunei Darussalam Timber Products Expo received an encouraging number of visitors and attracted public interest in timber products. Much of the positive feedback came from companies and visitors to the expo.

“Given the positive response, it is hoped that Brunei Darussalam Timber Products Expo will become an annual activity for the Forestry Department and be included in the activity calendar for the International Day of Forests.

Insya Allah, the expo has the potential to promote local timber products from local companies, in addition to raising public awareness on the advantages in the use of wood products as construction material, ornamentation and furniture.”

She said the expo aims to provide exposure to local timber products exhibiting quality and creativity. “The produced items are believed to have the potential to compete with imported products.

“These products definitely have the potential to be further developed for the international market. Thus, the timber industry can also help contribute to the country’s economic growth.”

Kilang Papan Batang Mitus Sdn Bhd was declared the winner of categories A (kitchen dining table-and-chair set) and B (living-room furniture set) in the timber products competition.

Second place for category A went to TS Wood Sdn Bhd, while Syarikat Kilang Papan Pengiran Maharaja Anakanda Pengiran Haji Ahmad Sdn Bhd came in third place.

Tsen Sdn Bhd placed second for Category B, while third place went to Sunukoh Timber Co Sdn Bhd.
