    Exploring opportunities at spirulina farm

    Azlan Othman

Academic members of Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) Faculty of Science (FoS) and Faculty of Integrated Technologies (FIT) visited Tabérumo Biofarm (B) Sdn Bhd (TBMB) at Darussalam Enterprise Bio-Innovation Corridor Industrial Park in Kampong Tungku-Rimba recently.

The visit aimed to exchange ideas between UBD and TBMB for potential collaborations and career development of UBD students.

The UBD team visited TBMB’s office and facilities on-site, and discussed its business, organisational structure and products.

The possibility of internship placements and career opportunities for UBD students were also discussed.

The teams also discussed potential joint research collaborations and agreed to proceed with detailed discussions in the future. Such a relationship can be beneficial for both UBD and TBMB, where UBD students can be trained to be employment ready, while TBMB can minimise training downtime for new UBD recruits. TBMB will also benefit from accumulating academic evidence related to their products.

TBMB is a leading company in the large-scale cultivation of spirulina using photobioreactor (PBR) system and the production of ‘Tabérumo ice flake’ made with edible microalgae spirulina. Tabérumo originated from Japan and is the world’s first fresh frozen ice-flake raw spirulina. It meets Japanese’s rigorous and stringent food safety standards and is certified Halal by the Halal Food Control Division under the Syariah Affairs Department.

Tabérumo is currently sold mainly in the Japanese market by Tabérumo Corp, the parent company of TBMB. However, works are currently in progress to market this product in Brunei.
