    Exploring areas for Brunei-Korea cooperation

    There are many areas for cooperation between Southeast Asian and South Korean agencies and institutions including universities particularly in technology, innovation, education and cultural exchanges.

    This was said by Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Global Affairs) Dr Joyce Teo Siew Yean during a Korea-Brunei roundtable with Friends of Southeast Asia hosted by the Korean Embassy in Brunei Darussalam and UBD yesterday.

    The discussion included strengthening Brunei-Korean relations and presentations from former Korean ambassador to Singapore Suh Chung Ha on Korean-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative (KASI) and Professor Kim Hyung Jong from the Department of International Relations, Yonsei University on Korea-Brunei relations.

    There was a panel on digital and education sectors, comprising Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Services) Dr Mohamad Saiful bin Haji Omar; InfoCom Federation Brunei Chairperson Pengiran Sarimah binti Pengiran Haji Abdul Latiff Abbas; Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) and Darussalam Enterprise (DARe) Chief Executive Officer Daniel Leong; and Assistant Professor (Educational Technology) and Programme Leader (School Partnership) at Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education, UBD Dr Juraidah binti Haji Musa. The panel was moderated by UBD School of Business and Economics Professor Ahmed Masood Khalid.

    The tourism and culture panel, moderated by UBD Director of Institute of Asian Studies Dayangku Dr Noor Hasharina binti Pengiran Haji Hassan, included Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Haji Mohd Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan; Brunei Art Forum President Dato Paduka Haji Shofry bin Haji Abdul Ghafor; Brunei-Korea Association for Friendship President Hajah Normah Suria Hayati binti Pehin Jawatan Dalam Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama (Dr) Haji Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri; and UBD Programme Leader (Geography, Environment and Development) at Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Gabriel Yong Yit Vui.

    The final panel on regional and global challenges included UBD Academy of Brunei Studies Assistant Lecturer Pengiran Dr Mohd Hafiizh bin Pengiran Haji Hashim; Brunei Darussalam Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Dr Azmi bin Mohamad; and MFA Assistant Director of ASEAN Department Lim Hung Ming. It was moderated by Professor Ahmed Masood Khalid.

    Ambassador of Korea to Brunei Darussalam Kim Soung-eun was also present during the roundtable.
