THE Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Working Committee in Social Enterprise yesterday held a one-day workshop on ‘Social Enterprise Ideation: Heart of the Community – Making Social Enterprises Work’ at the Yayasan Complex in the capital.
Legislative Council (LegCo) member cum guest of honour Yang Berhormat Nik Hafimi binti Abdul Haadii noted that a social enterprise by definition has many interpretations, but in a nutshell, “Social enterprises are businesses that trade to intentionally tackle social problems, provide people access to employment and training or help the environment. Using the power of the marketplace to solve the most pressing societal problems, social enterprises are commercially viable businesses existing to benefit the public and the community, rather than shareholders and owners,” she said.
Social enterprises serve three main goals/parameters driven by a public or community cause; be it social, environmental, cultural or economic. It also derives most of its income from trade, not donations or grants.
“This is crucial in what Yayasan’s Social Enterprise Project Committee is trying to push,” she said.
She explained that social enterprises use the majority of their profits to work towards their social mission.
The facilitators – recognised regionally for the challenges and experiences they have undertaken in being champions of social change – were @elimchiewtv founder Elim Chiew, Director and Chief Executive Office of Project N Pte Ltd Ernawaty Sorianto, UNFRAMED founder Larry Tchiou and Co-founder of Women in Asia Vivian Lim.
The main objective of the workshop was to enable the facilitators who are experienced in the social enterprise industry to not just re-energise and engage, but also to provide some overview and ideation to assist Yayasan Strategic Committee on Social Enterprise Project to further develop its long-term strategy and also the implementation programme.
LegCo members Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari and Yang Berhormat Iswandy bin Ahmad, representatives from various companies and organisations as well as invited guests attended the workshop.
