Some 12 expectant mothers received nursing covers during the Childbirth Class of the Women and Children’s Centre at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital last Saturday.
The nursing covers, donated by a ‘Hamba Allah’, were presented by Advisor of Women’s Institute of Brunei Darussalam (WI) Datin Hajah Masni binti Haji Mohd Ali who said the initiative by the Childbirth Class group, led by RIPAS Nursing Officer Hajah Halimah binti Mohd Tahir and WI, supports the healthcare of babies through breastfeeding.
She also highlighted the need of the private sector including non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to work together to protect, promote and support breastfeeding practice by mothers.
She said, “The importance of complete breastfeeding of up to two years meets the stipulations in Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 233 where it is highlighted breastfeeding builds the bond between mother and child.”
“Breastfeeding is a wise investment and cost effective as it contributes to the growth and development of the baby’s brain and the first drop of mother’s milk called colostrum is the first immunisation for babies as it is rich with antibodies as well as Vitamin A and E to prevent infections and allergies and diarrhoea and it stimulates children IQ level,” she added.
Datin Hajah Masni also called on young mothers to share their meaningful breastfeeding experience to their children as a motivation for their daughters who go through motherhood.
The presentation was followed by a demonstration of the proper way to use the nursing covers and a get-together session.
Nursing covers are designed to help mothers when breastfeeding their babies while at the same time giving them privacy nursing their babies in a public area.
