ANY projects that pose an environmental impact, need to undergo an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and companies identified with environmental management issues are being monitored from time to time.
This was highlighted by Minister of Development Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar replying to questions by member of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari on environmental protection order and also concerns of water pollution in Brunei’s rivers.
The minister said that the quality of water in the rivers are checked from time to time by the drainage department under the Public Works Department (JKR) to detect any pollution in water.
As for the Hengyi project, the minister said, “All the requirements of EIA have been checked thoroughly including the quality of water around the project.”
