Elderly man fined BND5,000 for making false claims

The Magistrate’s Court yesterday sentenced an elderly man for making false claims of foreigners illegally entering the country.

Magistrate Mohammad Marzuqi bin Sabtu ordered Haji Zulkipli bin Haji Abu Bakar, 64, to settle a BND5,000 fine, or serve five months’ jail in default of payment, after he pleaded guilty to the charge of publishing false information by sending a WhatsApp message to a group purporting a foreign national’s entry into the country through a hidden jungle trail at 1.18pm on May 23.

The defendant, represented by defence counsel Daud Ismail, on Saturday pleaded for a sentence of probation order with community service, citing a previous decision. Lawyer Daud also put forward in court, among others, his client’s good intentions to warn and protect his family amid the pandemic.

The court on sentencing the defendant said that the defendant’s action could “undermine public confidence in the country’s security,” and he would have handed a custodial sentence had he denied the charge.
