An elderly woman was ordered to settle a BND3,000 fine after she pleaded guilty to charges related to false claims of foreigners illegally entering Brunei Darussalam.
DPP Raihan Nabilah Ahmad Ghazali’s facts of the case stated that Hajah Radizah binti Haji Awang Abu Bakar, 65, had received the forwarded message on a WhatsApp family group chat on May 23 at 1.18pm.
The defendant then forwarded the message to several of her close friends.
It subsequently became viral and led to police investigations.
Apart from personal circumstances, defence counsel Pengiran Khairul Nizam bin Pengiran Haji Mohd Yassin submitted in Hajah Radziah’s mitigations that she had believed that the message was true as she had received it from her younger brother.
She also expressed regret for her action and that the whole episode has traumatised her.
The prosecution raised the importance of safeguarding against the spread of false information.
Magistrate Mohammad Marzuqi bin Sabtu presided over the case.
