However, while the thrilling races may take centre stage, the festival features other customs and traditions that have been passed down for generations.
The festival’s origins can be traced back to over 2,000 years in ancient China, during the Warring States period.
The festival is primarily associated with the legend of Qu Yuan, a poet and statesman from the Chu kingdom. The poet composed verses echoing his unwavering love for his homeland and people, which resonated with the public.
When faced with exile after the kingdom’s downfall, he fell into despair and plunged into the Miluo River as an act of protest and sorrow.
Local fishermen raced to save him, but failed to do so.
Filled with grief and determination, they beat drums and threw rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves into the river to prevent evil spirits from claiming his body.
The making of such rice dumplings, also known as zongzi is an intimate part of the Dragon Boat Festival’s celebration.
Families come together to prepare the delicacies, passing down recipies and techniques from generation to generation. It fosters a sense of togetherness and strengthens familial bonds.
These pyramid-shaped rice dumplings contain various fillings such as meats, beans, or nuts.
It is a culinary delight that embodies the festival’s origins, as the dumplings were initially thrown into the river to nourish and appease the river gods.

During the festivities, people attempt to balance eggs on their ends, believing that it brings good luck and wards off evil spirits as it requires precision and concentration as participants carefully position the eggs on their vertical ends.
