The effectiveness of scholarships for overseas studies needs to be reviewed.
The matter was raised by Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Haji Abdul Wahab bin Apong, who said, “Some graduates are still without work, due to lack of employment opportunities after completing their studies, including those who studied abroad.”
He posed the question, “How far does the coordination and effective of overseas scholarships meet the needs of our country?” while also suggesting that scholarships should be suitably granted and for students to be given employment bonds after graduation.
In response, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud said, “The granting of scholarships needs to be coordinated with the relevant parties, particularly the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Office, in taking the required measures for alignment.
“To restrict the scholarship may demotivate the students in their efforts to achieve excellence. This matter needs to be jointly discussed and considered. It needs to be balanced and free from bias, where one party or side is overlooked.”
