Educational trip sheds light on traditional designs, culture

Some 32 interior design students from Politeknik Brunei visited the Teng Yun Temple (To’Kong China Brunei Darussalam) located at the heart of the capital.

Led by teachers Intan Syamimi Kifrawi and Hadi, the group was welcomed by Teng Yun Temple Chairman Lee Eng Ching and Deputy Chairman Tiah Eng Beng as well as the executive committee of the temple.

The chairman recalled the long history of the temple.

“In 1918, the late Dato Temenggong Cheok donated a piece of land for the building of what was previously known as Teng Yun Monastery at the Old Harbour of Bandar Seri Begawan.

Our temple now known as Teng Yun Temple has stood strong for more than 100 years,” he said.

“In 1953, the land was requested to be returned to the government for public use. Hence by the consent from Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam, a new plot of land as well as a donation was given to relocate, which is the land we are currently on. In 1960, this temple was built.

“In 2021, after more than 60 years since the building of the temple, renovations were needed. Today, we are proud to showcase the new look and grandeur of our temple.”

The visit aimed to expose students to traditional design material used in construction of the temple as well as the traditional Chinese culture. – James Kon
