Early childhood, STEAM education in the spotlight

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization High Officials Meeting (SEAMEO HOM) is an opportunity to share innovation, expand networks and deepen collaboration under Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) thus synergising efforts to advance the future of education, science, and culture across Southeast Asia.

This was highlighted by Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education Aliuddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, who also presented Brunei Darussalam’s country report on the implementation of the SEAMEO Priority Areas.

He highlighted the implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Education and Skills as well as the flagship initiatives of Early Childhood Education (ECE) in Brunei Darussalam such as the implementation of the Compulsory Education Act at the 47th SEAMEO HOM in Bangkok, Thailand, from November 26 to 28.

The annual meeting convened by the SEAMEO Secretariat, gather-ed high officials, delegations and representatives from the Ministries of Education of the 11 SEAMEO Member States, Associate Member Countries, Affiliate Members, SEAMEO Regional Centres and Network, along with SEAMEO partners. Discussions centred on proposed programmes, financial matters, and other critical issues concerning the organisation’s administration and operations. Deputy Minister of Education of Thailand Surasak Phancharoenwo-rakul officiated the meeting.

The meeting also saw an awarding ceremony, where Brunei Darussalam received three SEAMEO awards, showcasing its commitment to education and innovation. Pehin Dato Jamil Primary School received the SEAMEO SEPS Project Grant with a USD3,000 award for its healthy lunch programme, set for implementation in 2025.

Seri Mulia Sarjana International School earned third place in the SEAMEO-Japan Education for Sustainable Development Award for promoting lifelong STEM learning through community engagement.

Meanwhile, Suzanah binti Haji Kurus from Katok Secondary School also secured third place of the Ki Hajar Dewantara Award for her innovative science education presentation.
