A man and a single mother, both locals and unemployed, were ordered to settle fines of BND500 each or serve a month’s jail in default of payment after they pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to shoplifting jars of Nutella.
Prosecutor Hajah ‘Adzimah Mukarramah binti Haji Salleh informed Senior Magistrate Lailatul Zubaidah Hussain that Haji Ardi bin Haji Tuah, 43, and Norasmah binti Asali, 36, both intended to commit theft when they arrived at One Station Supermarket in Kampong Mentiri and saw the jars of Nutella at a section at 2.15pm on November 1, 2018.
Haji Ardi took two jars of 950ml Nutella and put them in Norasmah’s handbag followed by Norasmah taking another two jars and hiding them in her handbag.
They then left the supermarket.
The same day, a staff found the CCTV footage showing the defendants in action.
The staff lodged a police report the following day which led to the defendants’ arrest.
Investigations showed that the duo had consumed two of the stolen jars of Nutella while the other two were sold to Haji Ardi’s friend for BND4 per jar. The proceeds were used for the duo’s personal use.
