THE Ministry of Health (MoH), through its Health Promotion Centre in collaboration with Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) attachment students held a plain water drinking campaign at Pintu Malim Primary School in Jalan Kota Batu yesterday.

The programme, dubbed ‘Lakas Tah Minum Air Kosong 2018’, aims to encourage students and staff including teachers to adopt the healthy habit of drinking plain water.

The ministry’s ‘Brunei Darussalam National Health and Dietary Status’ research in 2011 shows that 34.6 per cent of children aged between five and 14 consumed sugary drinks on a daily basis, and one out of two children aged five were overweight or obese.

The campaign was launched primarily because of these glaring statistics and to support the MoH’s ‘drink plain water’ policy introduced in March last year.

Several activities have been held as part of the campaign since February 3 such as a colouring competition for children aged one to three and a drawing competition for Years 4 to 6 students.

The activities at the school began with a welcoming speech by the school’s Headmistress Hajah Noordini binti Haji Tuah, who handed certificates to winners of the colouring and drawing competitions.

A health talk on the importance of drinking plain water and practising a healthy lifestyle, a quiz and a health exhibition were also held during the event.
