BRUNEI Darussalam and the United States (US) reaffirmed the warm defence relations and robust bilateral cooperation and looked forward to bring this to greater heights, following a meeting between Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for South and Southeast Asia at the US Department of Defense Dr Joseph H Felter yesterday.

During the courtesy call held at the Ministry of Defence (MinDef) Complex in Bolkiah Garrison, the Minister of Defence II congratulated Dr Felter on his appointment which took effect last year and also extended his appreciation towards the US for the active role it takes in the Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) regional grouping.

Early last month, the US held a sideline meeting with Asean Defence Ministers, which Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi attended as part of his programme during the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

The meeting that was chaired by US Secretary of Defense James Mattis was an avenue for both the US and Asean to discuss issues of priorities in the Asia-Pacific as well as issues of common concern.

Dr Felter is currently in the region to attend the Asean Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting-Plus (ADSOM-Plus) which will take place from today until July 13 in Singapore.
