DPMM FC will host Indian outfit FC Goa in a friendly match to mark the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium today at 9pm.
The match is the inaugural event under the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Youth and Sports Affairs signed between the two Governments in February 2016 during the visit of Hamid Ansari, then Vice President of India, to Brunei Darussalam.
The Government of India arranged the visit of FC Goa to Brunei Darussalam as a gesture of friendship to the Government and the people of Brunei Darussalam.
Organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam and the Indian High Commission in Brunei Darussalam, the match is open to members of the public to witness a brand of football from the two sides known for differing reasons.
DPMM FC, champions of S League in the 2015 season, recently completed their season with a 2-1 victory over Garena Young Lions in head coach Steve Kean’s final competitive game in charge of the club.
Meanwhile, FC Goa have only started the new 2017-18 season in India making a perfect start with a 3-2 victory over Chennaiyin FC.
The 2015 runners-up, who then lost out to Chennaiyin in the final stage, raced to a commanding 3-0 lead before the latter provided a tense end after getting two goals back.
DPMM FC experimented a new-look side in a behind closed doors match in preparation of the FC Goa friendly at the Jerudong Mini Stadium yesterday.
The club recalled Fakharrazi Hassan from MS ABDB and made an instant impact after netting twice in the 3-0 win in the 14th and 28th minute.
The club looked to find some sharpness ahead of the FC Goa friendly and they killed the visitors with a third goal after good play from a midfield man who sliced a pass to Shahrazen Said before the forward teed off Khairul Anwar in the box to tap home from close range.
DPMM FC broke into a counter with Fakharrazi proving a threat on the wings and fortunately for their opponents the ball which took a deflection off the recalled fullback ended wide.
The ‘Gegar Gegar’ men showed that they were still in competition mode despite being off season as Shahrazen made a fine ball control before firing wide.
Tonight’s match marks Kean’s final game in charge of the club after a four-year spell.
The former Blackburn Rovers FC manager guided the Brunei-based outfit to their first-ever S League title in 2015 having steered them to the Singapore League Cup the previous season.
