DPMM FC marked their return to the domestic top flight with a 16-1 thumping victory over Bakes FC in the Brunei Super League 2021 at the Jerudong Mini Stadium in Jerudong last night.
The Gegar-Gegar men made their first appearance in the national league for the first time since making the switch from the then-called B League to the Malaysia Premier League in 2005.
DPMM FC defender Charlie Clough struck from close range to get his club up and running for the season, repeating the feat in the 2019 season when he helped the Brunei-based outfit to the lead against Tampines Rovers FC.
With plenty of attacking firepower at their disposal inspired by the 2019 Singapore Premier League top scorer Andrei Varankou, the Belarussian provided a reminder of the team’s undeniable strength after drilling home a composed finish.
DPMM FC forward Abdul Azizi bin Ali Rahman went close after beating the Bakes FC goalkeeper Ron Junior for pace but his effort which was prevented by a goal-bound clearance only delayed the inevitable.
Nurikhwan Othman opened his account with a powerful header after connecting from a Hendra Azam pinpoint cross while Azwan Ali rasping volley equated a finish of the highest quality.
Abdul Azizi was struck by injury when he was chasing a ball, leading to an early change as Razimie Ramlli came in his place. Varankou, who has an eye for goal as characterised with his debut season, took his chance with an easy finish after he was set up by Azwan Ali.
Azwan Ali had a good first touch to set up an opportunity before stabbing home for his second goal of the game.
Debutant Asyraffahmi Norsamri came close to score his first goal for the club but Ron Junior parried his shot at the near post. Nevertheless, Clough planted home a fine header after connecting from a wonderful Azwan Ali’s cross.
Varankou showed his class with a delightful flying header giving Ron Junior absolutely no chance after Najip Tarif had floated in a neat cross.
Razimie Ramlli buried his header past the outstretched Bakes FC goalkeeper after yet another appetising delivery from Najip Tarif to make it double digits for the returning DPMM FC.
Bakes FC got a rare consolation only for DPMM FC to continue the barrage of attacks which resulted in six more goals to illustrate their dominance.
