DPMM FC face Geylang test in Singapore Cup

    Fadhil Yunus

DPMM FC will begin their quest for a league and cup double this season against plucky Geylang International in the Komoco Motors Singapore Cup 2019 at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore tonight.

The newly crowned Singapore Premier League champions, who have also been drawn alongside Hougang United and Albirex Niigata (S) in Group ‘B’, will look for a victory that will put them in contention for a place in the knock-out stages.

DPMM FC face a tricky customer in the form of the Eagles, who look certain to seal a top five finish in the league on the back of a decent season.

Geylang most recently extinguished Hougang’s title hopes after holding them to a 4-4 draw, and have the ingredients to repeat the trick against Adrian Pennock’s charges.

The Eagles also pulled off a stunning 1-0 win against the league’s favourites Albirex Niigata (S).

Geylang have showcased their attacking prowess against the league’s giants but they will need to contain a DPMM FC side who had found the net three times in the last three matches against them.

The Gegar Gegar men have also won five of the last six meetings against the Eagles and have not tasted defeat against them since October 2017.

Last year, the cup competition was contested in a knock-out phase where eight teams played two-legged home and away matches.

The Brunei-based outfit proceeded to the final for their best ever result in the competition but their title dreams were ended after Albirex Niigata (S) registered a handsome 4-1 victory.

Meanwhile, Albirex Niigata (S) will meet Hougang United in the other Group ‘B’ game at the Jurong East Stadium the same night.

In Group ‘A’, record winners Home United will face Balestier Khalsa at the Bishan Stadium while Tampines Rovers FC, fresh from inflicting DPMM FC’s first home defeat of the season, take on Warriors at the Our Tampines Hub.

Komoco Motors was recently named as the new title sponsors of the prestigious Singapore Cup, signalling an end to a longstanding partnership with RHB, who had been a fervent supporter for 14 years.
