Rodney Lim Teck Guan emerged champion for the second time in the Under-20 School Holiday Chess Blitz after besting a field of 25 entrants at the Brunei Chess Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex yesterday.
The 17-year old amassed 8.5 points followed by Abdul Zahirul Haq and Wong Tze Yoong.
His rivals Zahirul Haq and Wong also finished in the same position during the first part of the tournament earlier this month.
Awangku Muhd Hazim Safwan claimed the fourth spot while On Jing Wei took fifth and Muhammad Zeffre rounding off the top six.
Lim told the Bulletin, “I performed better in the last edition. I think I played more solid and I didn’t have any blunders during the first tournament.”
The teenager started playing chess in 2016 but did not take it seriously until a year or two later.
“I joined the chess club at St George’s School when I was in Year 8. I enjoyed my first game and started training,” said the Politeknik Brunei (PB) student.
Meanwhile, Awangku Md Ayyub finished in top place in the under-16 category ahead of runners-up Kyla Marie and Abdul Qawiy. Kyla Marie was also named as the best female player in the tournament.
Nurzahirah topped the under-12 category ahead of runners-up Howard Wee and Harrod Wee.
Deputy President of Brunei Chess Federation (BCF) Pengiran Abd Rahman bin Pengiran Lela Wijaya Pengiran Haji Yussof presented the prizes.
The deputy president said the two local members recently obtained national arbiters licenses after passing their online exams during the virtual FIDE Arbiters Workshop.
The federation plans to organise a new year tournament in an open category next month.
