Don’t fall prey to hoax callers

The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) has been made aware that a number of mobile and fixed line subscribers have received calls informing them of a parcel for collection from a forwarding company.

Although these calls appear with a Brunei country code (ie +673), they are followed by an eight digit phone number. This is a fake number as local phone numbers only have seven digits.

AITI assures the public that the Unified National Networks Sdn Bhd (UNN) and its international partners are investigating and monitoring the source of these calls and traffic to ensure these calls are being restricted before reaching mobile and fixed line subscribers.

As part of AITI’s efforts to protect consumer interests, subscribers are advised to

i) be extra cautious when answering calls from unfamiliar numbers;

ii) never provide personal details over the phone. If subscribers have provided personal details to what they believe is a hoax call, it is encouraged that they contact the Royal Brunei Police Force to lodge an official report; and

iii) call the forwarding company to confirm if the request to collect is true.
