Kingston Beverage and Creamery Sdn Bhd hosted a blood donation drive yesterday at its premises at the Beribi Industrial Park where 82 pints of blood was collected.
The drive in its ninth year, organised in collaboration with the Blood Donation Centre of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital, saw the participation of Kingston’s management and employees, as well as staff from neighbouring offices and the public. Mohd Zulazmi bin Sambas was among the successful donors, marking his fourth time donating blood.
The Kampong Setia ‘B’ resident, who works at Kingston’s beverage section, began donating blood in his early 30s. Now at 36, he continues to feel motivated and said, “I have never been afraid or nervous. What I always keep in mind is that my blood could be the reason three people survive or have their lives prolonged.”
Bangladeshi national Shahadah Harun, who has worked at Kingston for over 20 years, has been a regular donor since 2006.
“Donating blood is a noble act. We need to help fellow humans suffering from chronic diseases, those requiring transfusions or individuals who have lost blood due to accidents. Rolling up your sleeves to donate a pint of blood could give hope to someone fighting illness or even a second chance at life,” he said.
Meanwhile, 30-year-old Nuruliana Zailiza hoping to make her second blood donation, was unable to proceed after failing the health screening. “I first donated blood during last year’s campaign after trying several times and being unsuccessful due to low blood pressure. When I finally got the green light, I was happy. Although I was disappointed this time, I hope to donate again at the next campaign to help save lives and support the RIPAS blood bank,” she said.
Long-time donor Kimberly Xiao Meii recalled her first experience donating blood during Sixth Form.
“I wasn’t afraid of needles, but the others’ reactions made it a bit scary. My first experience was spontaneous, tagging along with friends. After that, I made it a point to donate whenever I could. It’s a rewarding experience,” she said.
All successful donors were rewarded with Kingston ice cream, goodie bags and refreshments.
Kingston hopes the initiative will raise greater awareness of the importance of donating blood and encourages more individuals to contribute towards increasing the country’s blood reserves. – Lyna Mohamad
