Do not gossip about others’ faults, says imams

    Azlan Othman

Religious authorities yesterday urged the Ummah to not maliciously expose others’ faults or secrets.

In the Friday sermon, imams said Muslims tend to forget or neglect the warning from Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) on gossiping about others’ fault, while noting the act is considered Ghibah or backbiting.

“There are matters that cannot be arbitarily opened or spread to others such as household secrets,” said the imams, adding that there are exceptions such as alerting the authorities to wrongdoing, asking for help in eliminating wrongdoing or exposing evil or immoral acts.

The imams said there are people who misuse social media as well as writings, images and videos to spread others’ fault.

“As faithful Muslims, we should uphold respect and not aim to hurt others, be it in terms of attitude or conversation.

“If we see shameful things done by someone secretly, we should not disseminate it to others via writing, images or videos, but instead cover his faults and give advice when alone or in a private place.

“A person is said to be glorious not because of himself or herself but for Allah the Almighty,” said the imams.
