The year 2019 saw peak Brunei-South Korea engagement when Busan hosted 2019 ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit as part of 30th anniversary of cooperation between the region and country.
Brunei was the ASEAN country coordinator, and exchanges were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The visit of Friends of Southeast Asia delegation from South Korea is hoped to spur more exchanges between Brunei and Korea.
This was said by former Korean ambassador to Singapore Suh Chung Ha who heads the delegation with Yonsei University’s Department of International Relations Professor Kim Hyung-Jong.
He was attending a dinner at Ambassador of Korea to Brunei Darussalam Kim Soung-eun’s residence at the Diplomatic Enclave, Jalan Kebangsaan recently to welcome Global Korean Scholarship (GKS) Alumni members and the delegation.
Ambassador Kim noted that this is the first visit by Friends of Southeast Asia since the pandemic. They are special envoys of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Cooperation with Southeast Asia aimed at enhancing bilateral ties with the region.
Professor Kim said he was delighted in seeing the success of GKS and noted that there is room for further cooperation between both countries.
GKS Alumni in Brunei President Lee Seck Chun said the dinner was not only for reminiscing but also a chance to honour the achievements of the alumni while serving as a platform to build meaningful connections.
