Department store fined for violating social distancing guidelines

A department store in Jalan Muara was slapped with a compound fine of BND5,000, for holding a public event on November 8, without conforming to the health guidelines on mass gatherings.

“The company was found holding a promotional sales event and encouraged a gathering of more than 350 people, without implementing any appropriate regulatory measures,” said the Ministry of Health (MoH) in a statement yesterday.

The MoH also reminded that violating any of the issued orders is an an offence under the Infectious Diseases Act (Chapter 204), which carries a compound fine of up to BND5,000, upon conviction.

Offenders also face a fine of up to BND10,000 or a jail term of up to six months, or both.

Members of the public are advised to practise social responsibility by maintaining personal hygiene, observing proper coughing and sneezing etiquette, wearing a face mask in crowded public places, and staying away from public places and social gatherings if feeling unwell.

Members of the public, including owners of business premises, are required to comply with regulations and directives related to the reduction of social distancing measures currently enforced.
