De-stressing with poolside yoga

The Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) organised a yoga session at the centre’s poolside to help raise awareness on mental health issues yesterday, in conjunction with World Mental Health Day.

The yoga session was instructed by JPMC Fitness Centre’s instructor, William Chong Siew Yoong, with the support of 40 individuals who signed up to experience the impact of yoga to mental health.

“Mental health is important at every stage of life for our emotional, psychological and social well-being.

“Our mental health determines how we handle stress and make healthy choices,” said JPMC.

“Yoga has been shown to lower stress hormones by simultaneously releasing beneficial brain chemicals such as endorphins and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid).”

JPMC also highlighted how they can provide assistance with anyone facing mental health issues, from relieving stress through physical activities at JPMC Fitness Centre, to specialist consultations with psychologists and psychiatrists.
