Cool, comfortable, casual

ANN/THE DAILY STAR – In today’s fast-paced society, trends are constantly evolving, covering everything from makeup and clothing styles to language. A striking example of this is the rapid shift in fashion preferences.

Recently, loose-fitting denim jeans have surged in popularity, with styles like flared or mom jeans becoming go-to choices, especially among younger generations. For many, it seems skinny jeans have become a relic of the past.

The trend of baggy jeans, popular in the 1980s and 90s and often called “boyfriend jeans”, saw a decline in the 2000s as skinny, low-rise jeans took over. But now, baggy jeans are making a comeback, sparking curiosity: could more iconic fashion trends of the past resurface as well?

The resurgence of baggy jeans became noticeable around the pandemic period in 2020-2021. Many attribute this shift to the more relaxed attitudes brought on by quarantine, which influenced our fashion choices.

The appeal of baggy jeans is clear – they are comfortable, breathable, and offer a relaxed yet stylish look. With extra room and a casual flair, many have embraced baggy jeans as a way to balance comfort with individuality.

A generational aspect may also be influencing this trend’s revival. The contrast in fashion preferences between Millennials and Gen Z has been widely discussed, but the shift to baggy jeans appears to be led largely by Gen Z, marking a clear departure from previous generational styles.

Younger people seem to favour relaxed, urban aesthetics that they consider more “cool” than traditional trends associated with Millennials. This shift also serves as a form of self-expression, allowing Gen Z to distinguish themselves through unique styles that resonate within their peer groups. Nostalgia likely plays a role in this revival too. Social media often showcases trends inspired by 90s subcultures, and celebrities adopting 90s fashion have only fueled this influence.

Straight-leg and wide-leg jeans now stand where skinny jeans once dominated, channeling clear inspiration from earlier decades.

Additionally, baggy jeans are versatile and suit different body types. Unlike skinny jeans, they don’t cling tightly to the body, offering flexibility in styling. From crop tops to oversized sweatshirts, baggy jeans pair well with various options, adding versatility to wardrobes.

With the resurgence of retro trends, it’s possible that other past fashion styles may reappear. The return of baggy denim reflects a shift towards comfort and distinctiveness that more people are embracing.
