Police seized a haul of cigarettes from a homemade wooden cart, abandoned by a man when the officers approached him.

Some 320 cartons of cigarettes were discovered by traffic police during a routine patrol in Kampong Setia, near Perdana Wangsa Haji Mohammad Mosque on Friday.

The man was pushing the cart full of boxes when personnel from the Traffic Control and Investigation Department of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) spotted him, according to a statement.

Upon seeing the police personnel, the man fled the scene, leaving behind the cart and four boxes, which were later found to contain the cigarettes.

The contraband was handed over to the Royal Customs and Excise Department.

The RBPF said in a statement that it will continue to conduct regular surveillance to enforce the law by stamping out negative elements of the society.
