Snatching 29 gold, 34 silver and 20 bronze medals, Contingent Cluster 3 emerged as the overall champion of the Brunei Darussalam School Games (BDSG) during the prize presentation ceremony at Tutong Sports Complex yesterday.
Second place went to Contingent Cluster 1 with 23 gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze medals while third place went to Contingent Cluster 2 who collected 15 gold, 12 silver and 14 bronze medals.
Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh was the guest of honour.
Hayley Wong Ann Yue from Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna Secondary School was crowned the best female athlete after collecting four gold and two bronze medals from the swimming event.
Meanwhile, Zeke Chan Zhi Yue from Jerudong International School, also a swimming athlete, emerged as best male athlete after obtaining four gold, one silver and one bronze medals from his event.
The guest of honour presented the prizes.
Some 696 students from schools nationwide took part in the first ever BDSG.
The tournament consisted of students under 18 years old in 2022 and studying in Years 7 to 13 at secondary schools, colleges and sixth form centres under the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religious Affairs. The competing students were divided into six contingents based on cluster 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Four sports were contested – athletics, swimming, sepak takraw and badminton with 71 gold medals, 71 silver medals and 71 bronze medals up for grabs.
Among the goals of the tournament are to identify students with the potential and talent to represent Brunei Darussalam Schools Sports Council (MS SSBD) to compete in national, regional and international tournaments as well as in preparation for participation for the tournament organised by Asian Schools Sports Federation and the ASEAN Schools Sports Council.
