The Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT), through the Forestry Department and co-organiser Brunei Climate Change Secretariat (BCCS), launched the Brunei Darussalam Conference On Forest: ‘Forests And Biodiversity: Unveiling Its Economic Potential’ yesterday, at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.
Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong launched the event in conjunction with the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition (MYCE) 2021.
Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Ir Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari, Permanent Secretary at the MPRT Hajah Tutiaty binti Haji Abdul Wahab, Permanent Secretary (Planning, Land Use and Environment) at the Ministry of Development (MoD) Dr Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abdul Razak, deputy secretaries at the MPRT, Director of Forestry Noralinda binti Haji Ibrahim, foreign dignitaries and representatives from various agencies also attended.
The two-day conference explores opportunities for green economic growth through the commercialisation of forest biodiversity, such as downstream timber industry and eco-tourism.
It aims to create research and development (R&D) opportunities in the field of forestry, biodiversity and conservation, and act as a platform to share information.
The conference is divided into three thematic topics: biodiversity and economy; green economy for sustainable future; and research opportunities: economic diversification And protection.
Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali discussed the connection between forest biodiversity and economy, specifically green economy.
The conference also saw the virtual presentation of various research papers from local and international experts.
Speakers and panellists included Dr Wong Koon Meng from the Singapore Botanic Garden on ‘Economic, Endemic, Environment: Brunei Context’ and Hajah Tutiaty on ‘Managing Forest Biodiversity for Its Economic Value Brunei Darussalam’s Perspective’.
Dr Nor Imtihan spoke on government’s effort in combatting climate change in her presentation on ‘Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP) – Towards a Resilient and Sustainable Future’, while Noralinda’s presented on ‘Brunei Forestry Sector: In Support to Green Economy’.
Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali and Dato Seri Setia Ir Awang Haji Suhaimi officiated the Green Space exhibition, whose participants include the BCCS, Forestry Department and local timber downstream companies.
The Nurture the Nature for our Future exhibition showcases the various products and services derived from the forestry sector, aimed at raising awareness on the importance of conserving the forest for future generations.
Brunei MYCE 2021 is an initiative by the MPRT to attract the meeting, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) market.
