Golf ball stop nets, erected at a popular golf course along the highway to protect motorists from wayward golf balls, collapsed recently due to strong winds.
The incident was a near miss as no cars were present at the time. However, it had raised serious concerns regarding the safety measures put in place.
The golf course was built in 1995, predating the construction of the adjacent highway.
Initially, the golf course had operated without golf ball netting, but since the construction of the highway and road traffic increased, stray golf balls became a safety hazard to passing vehicles. To address the issue, the net was subsequently added.
The recent collapse of the nets had prompted concerned public members to contact the authorities to look into the matter.
While an investigation has since opened and measures are drawn up to ensure the safety of motorists, it poses the question of whether these nets are made to withstand strong winds.
As such, we would like to see regular assessment and upgrade being carried out at the facilities to ensure that no unforeseeable incidents would result in the harm of innocent passers-by, or in this case, passing vehicles.
