Community sewing course empowers women

Fourteen female participants comprising of women and single mothers in Kampung Setia ‘A’ were selected to undergo a community sewing course that organised by the Community Development Department (JAPEM).

The programme aimed to encourage women and single mothers take up private enterprise and become less dependant on assistance.

A launching ceremony for the course was held at Pusat Bahagia Brunei-Muara District yesterday.

Permanent Secretary (Community and Culture) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Hajah Nor Ashikin binti Haji Johari was the guest of honour.

Assistant Director of Community Development of the General Welfare Service Section Dayangku Siti Saihalina binti Pengiran Haji Md Daud explained that the course aimed to polish potential of the participants in obtaining sewing skills and eventually they could set up their own business after completing the course.

‘’The course will be running for three months, after that participants will be given an entrepreneurship course so that they will be able to enhance their standard of living while at the same time become successful entrepreneurs.

“MCYS will provide free training and equipment and will assist the participants to find business locations or an incubator that can be use for participants to conduct their business,” she said.
