Community leaders urge compliance with guidelines

Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin, the leader of the local Chinese community said he would comply with the Ministry of Health’s (MoH) guidelines and vowed to not host a Chinese New Year open house this year.

“Thanks to the strategies deployed by the government and wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Brunei Darussalam managed to keep COVID-19 under control and carry on with our daily life in the new normal,” he said in an interview.

“The Chinese community can still celebrate Chinese New Year among loved ones and family members. Although open houses are not allowed, large families are permitted to hold events at banquet halls or restaurants. Lion dances are also permitted with BruHealth QR code usage.”

He urged the Chinese community to comply with MoH guidelines to minimise the risk of infection.

Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin also conveyed his wishes to the Chinese community with “gong xi fa cai and always practise social distancing in the new normal”.

Meanwhile, Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Ong Tiong Oh in a message highlighted the need for the Chinese community to follow the MoH guidelines.

He said, “This year’s celebration is different from previous years and we need to follow the MoH’s guidelines to make sure the country continues to curb COVID-19.

“I will not host an open house this year. During this Chinese New Year, we can celebrate and spend more time with our loved ones and family members.

“Despite not being able to visit friends’ homes, we can still call or send messages to convey Chinese New Year greetings.

“COVID-19 is still prevalent worldwide and we cannot be complacent. With public cooperation, wise leadership of His Majesty and following Brunei government guidelines, we can reduce risks and overcome this difficult time together.”

Yang Berhormat Ong Tiong Oh also conveyed his Chinese New Year wishes to the Chinese community for prosperity and good health.
