The community working together and joining disaster preparedness, response and recovery are important in ensuring inclusive and effective solutions to disaster risk reduction. This includes cooperation and community involvement to prepare for disasters through awareness programmes.
Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman said this during a keynote address at the 10th K-Safety Expo in Busan, South Korea. The minister is leading a delegation from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) to the expo from September 10 to today.
Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin said extreme weather conditions being experienced worldwide is a result of climate change and urged countries in the Asia Pacific region to take comprehensive actions to strengthen disaster safety and management.
The minister, as chair to ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management (AMMDM) for 2024, touched on the importance of global and regional cooperation in disaster management especially in sharing knowledge, resources and best practices among ASEAN member countries and dialogue partners through mechanism such as AMMDM Plus Korea established in 2022. Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin also highlighted several initiatives under ASEAN.
The minister made a courtesy call to South Korea’s Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-Min to discuss further strengthening of relationship and cooperation in disaster management between the two countries. Also discussed was cooperation in disaster management between ASEAN and South Korea.
K-Safety Expo is organised by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to showcase the latest technology in disaster prevention, response and recovery with over 250 participation from government agencies, private companies, research institutions and international organisations.
