Cold weather hits Greece, causing traffic disruptions, floods

XINHUA – Greece has been in the grip of a cold weather front since Sunday with heavy rainfall and snowfall that have caused traffic disruptions and flooding in parts of the country, authorities said.

In Athens, sections of Alimos seaside southern suburb flooded due to strong showers, while roads leading to Mount Parnitha in the northern suburbs were closed to traffic due to snowfall, according to the Fire Brigade.

In northern Greece, nearly 200 people who had been stranded in cars due to heavy rainfall near a ski resort close to the city of Naoussa, were evacuated by firefighters.

Police issued warnings for traffic restrictions due to icy conditions in mountainous zones from northern to southern Greece, such as a ban on trucks over 3.5 tonnes in parts of the road network, and requested motorists to use snow chains in certain areas, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

Schools remained closed in three regions of northern and central Greece due to the snowfall on Monday, and will remain closed, as meteorologists said that weather conditions will improve.

In Kalamata port city on Peloponnese peninsula, a thunderstorm with strong winds caused damage to dozens of homes, stores and boats.
