Some 30 kilogrammes of trash was collected during a beach clean-up campaign at Seri Kenangan Beach recently. Organised by the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BRC) Tutong District branch, the campaign was held in conjunction with the celebrations of World Beach Day and the 19th National Youth Day.
Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Abdul Aziz bin Haji Hamdan, who is also the village head of Kampong Sengkarai, launched the event and presented certificates of participation.
BRC president Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Ibrahim, together with 70 officers and members, as well as volunteers of the association’s Tutong branch, BRC school cadets from Sayyidina Othman Secondary School, Tanjong Maya Secondary School and Mahad Islam Brunei Tutong participated in the campaign.
World Beach Day, celebrated every September 1, is a global event to honour the importance of beaches. It also highlights their role as ecosystems, cultural landmarks and sources of joy.
The day raises awareness about preserving beaches, supporting biodiversity, sustainable livelihoods, and well-being. People are encouraged to organise events such as beach clean-ups and educational programmes to protect these coastal treasures for future generations. – Azlan Othman
